Nauvoo Trip 2007 – Part 4 – “Seeing Sites in Nauvoo 1″
Yeah!!! We finally made it to our destination! We camped for 10 days at a campground in Nauvoo. We took our time exploring and getting to know what was offered there (“Frank the Tour Guide” came in very handy).

This is us taking a walk on the main street of Nauvoo...there are a lot of cute, quaint shops there.
We took a REALLY long walk from our campground to a graveyard in Nauvoo (where many of the Saints from the 1800's were buried). It was about 2 1/2 miles one way, but it seemed much longer in the heat...we thought we would never get there. :-)

The next day we got out and about and started seeing the sites. During the summer in Nauvoo they have a LOT going on for tourists. The lady on the left played the lead character in a play called "Just Plain Anna Amanda." Ashley and Mikayla were excited to meet her afterward.
This is a view of the Nauvoo Temple. This is just how the temple looked back in the 1800's. But way back then, when the mobs forcibly drove the Latter-day Saints out of Nauvoo (a city they had built from marshland after being driven out of so many other homes), it was burned by arsonists. The temple was then rebuilt and completed and dedicated in 2002.
We took our kids (ages 12 and over) to do baptisms for the dead in the Nauvoo Temple.
This is another view of the temple. We took a bike tour of town...it was so fun!
And the temple at night...it faces and overlooks the great Mississippi River.
This is where they do the Nauvoo Pageant. This is it during the day while they are getting ready for the night performance.
We were lucky enough to be in Nauvoo for the 4th of July holiday. This is us getting ready for the 4th of July parade. We are on the corner right across from the temple.

More site seeing...
We got to watch the 4th of July Fireworks sitting below the temple and just above the Mississippi River...with a beautiful sunset in the background.
A very old historical marker...
A few days later we visited Carthage Jail...where Joseph Smith was murdered by an angry mob that stormed the jail where he was being held. This is our family standing outside of Carthage Jail.
This is the girls looking out the window where Joseph Smith fell to his death...it was a pretty intense experience to be there.
Here Mikayla is looking at a bullet hole in the door to the room where Joseph Smith was being held when the mobs rushed in with guns. Joseph's brother, Hyrum, was also killed that day.
