Trip to Brunswick, Georgia

We just had an awesome family trip. We got to drive down to Brunswick, Georgia (about 5 hours for us), which is where most of Frank’s family lives. His Mom and Dad are there as well as his brother, sister-in-law, two nephews and a niece.

Brunswick is part of what is called the “Golden Isles of Georgia,” which is south of Savannah. Some of us in the family had never heard of the area until recently, let alone been there before…so it was very exciting to visit.

Check out the website for the area to find out more: The Golden Isles

There are multiple islands grouped together…we were able to visit St. Simons and Jekyll Islands while we were there. It was a short trip so we didn’t get to see everything…but that’s a good excuse to go back.

The area has a lot of historical value as well, which I didn’t know. Megan impressed us all with what she had been learning in her Georgia history class this quarter.

Above: Megan…let the bird inside of you free…

Above: What’s so interesting????

Above: Mikayla and Frank on the pier.

Above: Shayne and PJ, “Are those fish guts??”

Above: Still hanging out on the pier. It was such a nice day…not too hot (can’t beat early October).

Above: We visited the “Bloody Marsh Battle Site.” This is the: “site of a decisive battle between British and Spanish forces in 1742, which determined the future claim of the English for the colony of Georgia.” You can read more here.

Above: This was an old grave yard by a cool church (Frank loves old grave yards). You can see the moss hanging from the trees.

Above: We got to visit Fort Frederica…another historical site. This is Ashley at the Visitor’s Center.

“The town and fort of Frederica were built in 1736 to protect British colonial interests against the Spanish. Today, Fort visitors can stroll along the streets of Frederica town… “

“Georgia’s fate was decided in 1742 when Spanish and British forces clashed on St. Simons Island. Fort Frederica’s troops defeated the Spanish, ensuring Georgia’s future as a British colony. Today, the archeological remnants of Frederica are protected by the National Park Service.”

Learn more about Fort Frederica.

Above: Donovan ready for battle.

Above: Megan and PJ finally get to take out all of their frustrations on each other.

Above: Mikayla getting into the act.

Above: Mikayla, “Uhm, Don, I don’t think you should do that…”

Above: Donovan and Ashley….what flag are you saluting?? (Don’s a lefty)

Above: All of the historical facts threw the girls into rounds of the song “Book of Mormon Stories.”

Above: Frank, “Well.” (I guess you had to be there). “Hay” any one?

Above: After all of our historical adventures, we met up with Uncle Marc, Marc Anthony, Jesse and Lyndsey at a beach on Jekyll Island. Poor Aunt Lynn was back home being very ill and missing out on all of the fun. And Grandma and Grandpa said, “Been there, done that.” :-)

(This sting ray (?) had washed up on the beach.)

Above: Marc Anthony. He just turned 15 the week before this and he is 6’1″!!

Above: Great Picture of Megan. This beach was called “Driftwood Beach” because of all of the cool trees washed up on the shore.

Above: The kids loved climbing around and finding “cool stuff” in the sand and rocks.

Above: Liz, Shayne & Frank just hangin’ out at the beach.

Above: Jesse, Marc Anthony, Ashely & Megan. This was a home on Jekyll Island (I think from the 1700′s??) that they are in the process of restoring right now. Most of the buildings on the Island were made from a mortar that was filled with sea shells. There were sea shells everywhere….all of the walkways, instead of bark dust or something, were either paved with sea shells in the cement or just plain sea shells scattered loosely. I had never seen that before.

Above: Frank checking out a gravestone.

Above: This is a cool bridge that goes from Brunswick over to Jekyll Island. Frank says that it used to be a drawbridge, so you would have to wait until the ships passed through before you could pass over.

Above: This is the marshland of the island as seen from the top of the bridge. There are a lot of marshy areas. The land must be very flat because when the tide comes in it goes IN a long way.

Above: This is back at Uncle Marc and Aunt Lynn’s house. The kids had a lot of fun there as well as at Grandma and Grandpa Noldens…who fed us really well while we were there!

If not, tell us some good place to go for Christmas — we are thinking about possibly Florida? Would that be close enough to see you all?Get in touch so we can meet up, yo!-McKay (usfourwhitneys.blogspot.com)
